Finalist in CCA Galleries Summer Exhibition 2024
This July my painting “Floating at high tide” was selected for the Summer Exhibition at CCA Galleries International at Hill Street in St Helier, Jersey.
I live and paint on the little island of Jersey, a tiny dot in the English Channel, 9 miles long and 5 miles wide. It is very close to the French coast but is in fact British!
My studio is only 3 minutes’ walk from the sea. Each day the ebb and flow of the tides will wash up a new treasure and source of inspiration for me. It could be a giant spider crab, a juicy purple sea slug, or the varied rockpools full of colourful seaweed patterns, that will inspire a painting.
I wasn’t born in Jersey, but after so many years here, surrounded by the sea, it feels like home. I grew up in London to Greek parents, and it was whilst spending summers in Greece that I first fell in love with the sea.
I can’t remember a time when I haven’t painted. I studied medicine and worked as a doctor and I still found time to paint as a way to relax. One day I saw opportunity to study for an Art degree on the island. That course challenged everything I thought I knew about art, and I loved it. But unexpected events meant a life-rethink and that’s when I took the plunge to pursue my dream of being an artist full time, and I haven’t looked back!
I have a passion for vibrant colour, pattern and texture which I incorporate into every painting. My Greek heritage also strongly influences the colours and themes of my work. The beautiful summer light, the many shades of blue, the variety of other colours seen across the Greek islands, and the ancient and folk art. The blue evil eye (το μάτι / Mati) is a Greek talisman that is said to protect you from bad luck and is often found in my paintings. I’ve also lived and travelled extensively in Australia, where I became fascinated by the colourful and intricate dot paintings of Aboriginal artists, and I often use sticks to create the dots and patterns in my paintings.
All these different influences inform the intricate patterns in my work. The paint is layered in a way to create vibrant, textured pieces that bring the subjects to life. The resulting paintings are tactile to the touch, and intricately detailed and individual.
It is vital that we all take responsibility to stop the growing cycle of pollution, climate change and overfishing that is damaging our oceans.
